Well Folks,
My posts have been a little irregular lately. I'm on another med school related grind. This is my midday lunch sanity break.
I found an interesting article that I thought was VERY important for the lives of the 20 something.
I was in my first wedding a year ago and too my surprise it was SOOO expensive. I was very naive, very broke, and very excited. There are so many things to consider.. mainly funds. I hope this article helps so many of my fellow 20 somethings who have friends getting married left and right. If anything it will give you something to think about when you get married. Maybe you will remember your girls and their pocketbooks?? or Maybe not? :-) I hope you do.

CurlyNikki interviews Andrea Bordeaux
Hey Peeps!
Its been a while since I have discussed my natural hair :-0 Its probably because I have not been taking care of it like I should. This article is great on the link below.. Idk who this chic is.. but it describes a lot of the stages in growing your natural hair. My newest challenge. SINGLE STRAND KNOTS!!! Unfortunately with my schedule recently I went tooo long without washing my hair and it was SOOOO tangled. I need to get it together.. or my hair is not going to grow :0 I need hopsital hair ideas.. prob need some professional help too.. But funds are low.. clearly.. refer to prior posts on vacays.
CurlyNikki interviews Andrea Bordeaux
Ten Things they do not tell you when you go natural
1) It takes work
2) Good hair products are expensive
3) The big chop is hard... but WORTH IT.
4) Men are scared by the short hair... but when it grows.. they love it.
5) The short phase is so much fun!! Low upkeep.
6) It grows fast.
7) Black people have a harder time adjusting to you being natural.. why? no clue.
8) Family can be the last to except it..
9) And to your permed friends.. respond.. yeah it may be a fad.. but i love it.. and keep it moving.
10) TRULY LEARN TO LOVE YOU! its all about learning every aspect of yourself including your curl. And no longer conforming to the social contructs of beautiful that have been enslaved into our heads for centuries.
What inspired u to go natural? Reading the autobiography of malcolm x is what planted my seed :-)
Romans 12: 2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
any stories about your hair..? or discovering your inner beauty?? let me know! You can be a guest on my blog :-0

well this aint grey's anatomy.. i can tell ya that.
Life at 25 has been very eye opening for me so far. Apart of this year has been all about experiencing life as a 3rd year medical student. Which in recent moments has been very dissapointing. When you grow up thinking of your future profession... hopefully the thoughts are positive. Full of excitement, passionate people, adventures and fulfillment.
To my suprise medicine has not been the rosy picture that I painted for myself. I have encountered folks with no patience, angry people, rude people, tired people, and judgmental people. Where do I fit into this world is what I often wonder?? Can I remain compassionate and not speak the hospital language called rude? And unfortunately these characteristics that seem to be often needed to survive in the hospital begin to spill into other areas of your life. I was so irritated the other day when my tea at starbucks took longer than 30 seconds. I get snippy with people without even realizing it. Oh and the hiearchy... Will I forget all these emotions once I am no longer on the bottom?? Which people feel the need to remind me more often then is neccesary. :0
Hopefully not. As I end this final week of 3rd year.. I am reflecting on all the things that made my year both wonderful and frustrating. Who were the greatest teachers and who were those who I could have done without. What made those great doctors great.. and the bad ones suck. Who inspired me to learn and be great? Who inspired me to run to my car as fast as possible once I was set free for the day?
This post is as much for me as it is my future med students and residents. BRIANA remember all the days you came home frustrated because a resident belittled you, made you feel stupid or did not treat you like an adult. Remember those residents who had conversations with you, got to know you as a person, encouraged you to give your patient the greatest care possible, offered what knowledge they had acquired so far and did not put on false aires about what knowledge they did have. Remember those attendings who welcomed the med student to the team, treated every one on the team fairly, checked the residents when they were out of line, and was interested in everyone's learning. Because yep! Residents are still learning too. Oh! And don't forget the insecure residents that lashed out at the med student to make themselves feel better. The confident and eager to learn residents were always refreshing and pleasant. Respecting that even if they didn't "like" you.. a hard worker can respect another hard worker at the end of the day.
And lastly remember the patients. Because they are why we joined this profession right? To serve, provide care with honesty and integrity. Care with both confidence and a humble spirit.
I know even more now then I did before there is a place for me. Compassionate docs that care are still out there. They exist. I see them. Not enough.. but i see them.
And at the end of the day... We are all living in the midst of the vanity of life. All these challenges have been seen before and will be seen again.
Ecclesiastes 1:9-10
That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done,
And there is nothing new under the sun.
Is there anything of which it may be said,
"See this is new?"
It has already been in ancient times before us.

running... yoga... Summertime fly and fit :-)
Hey folks! My computer is dying soooo these posts are SUPER QUICK!!
As you all know. I love to live, workout, eat, read and chill... IDK when I squeeze trying to be a doctor in the mix. :-0
Lately I have noticed a lot of my friends are getting into fitness as well ;-) Which is great of course!
I really think fitness is one of those things that really must deep down be apart of your life. So many people do it in waves... 6 months they work out hard core then the next 6.. they don't. either way.. Results will speak more than you telling everyone your latest work out trend. AnD!! even better when you feel good.. Thats all you need. Not compliments.. or feeling apart of the fitness community. ok enough of that!
RUNNING! When I started running after my first year of med school.. I started from scratch. I was never an outdoorsy girl. During the summer I went to the library in Rochester, MN to see what I could get my hands on :-) I found a great book that I read from cover to cover.
I highly encourage reading this book. It breaks it down. How to train for big races, what good shoes will do for you, what workouts compliment running (i.e yoga). Check it out!!!
And hopefully!! I will see you out there on the trails :-)
ALSO runners world is a great magazine! They have it at the library. And during the month of July they have a half marathon issue. VERY GOOD!
LAST BUT NOT LEAST!!!
Whose down for yoga next Saturday..?? I'm trying to diversify the class!! LETS GO!! 9am.
Some other GREAT SITES!

"med student down"
Well folks.. Another story for the year of the 25..
Today I done fell out.. as folks in NC say.
Let me tell a quick story. I am on OB/GYN at a nameless hospital in the queen city of charlotte.:-( I have to round SUPER early. Somehow it seems harder now than it did when I was on my surgery rotation at UNC.. idk.. maybe thats because I loved it there. Yep thats probably it. But anywho. I digress.
Well I eat at 5am so by 7ish I'm starting to need a snack. By 8 its time for my second breakfast. Which is usually a banana and/or a granola bar. For some reason this morning I forgot to grab my banana and granola bar. I had NO SNACKS. Worst decision you can EVER make as a med student.
Our first case was at 7am. We thought it would be quick.. Turned out we had more than we bargained for.
Around 830am. The hunger hit. I looked at the clock. In my head I said, "please God do not let me be this hungry." What is going on? "Come on Briana. You are strong and resilient." I start to get fidgity and I yawn. My mask gets messed up from my yawn. "Come on Briana, stay focused." "Oh no.. i'm starting to get lightheaded" things start fading..
"Dr. Such and Such... I think I am getting light headed." Well go sit down.. .BOOM.
I was out. Before I could even orient myself. I hit the floor! The room went dark and i think I heard med student down. I woke up to.. we might need a stretcher in OR 22 and my feet were propped up on the bovie machine.
I immediately said... NOOOO no stretcher please. Nurse says what about a wheel chair? Me. No i dont need that either.
I say.. " I'm hungry!" Surgeon: :Well what did u eat?" Me: cheerios (in my head.. at 5am!)
Surgeon: Well u arent the first and u wont be the last. Go get some food and come back.
I WAS OFFICIALLY STRUGGLING. Oh! and my finger broke my fall. yep its swollen.
Lesson learned. Never leave home without your snacks.
AND.. later that day.. I swear i was about to fall asleep during a long OR case. Nodding while standing up. I thought I was going to pass out part 2. And when I told the other med student on my team.. he responds. "NO YOU DIDNT" me. YES I DID. him: did u contaminate the field? me. NO. Him. OK good! u're fine then. u wont fail. lets go get u some snacks from the surgeons lounge.
*Gotta love the classmates.
I hope someone enjoys a laugh. Because I did.
I keep hearing Rihanna Man down in my head.

Assembly required :-/
Hey Friends! My BFF Amanda is back. Round 2. Enjoy :-)
So today I put together this new 3 compartment clothes hamper I bought on Sunday. It had been on my “things to buy” for a while so I was really excited to see it strolling thru the home section of Wal-Mart before I did my grocery shopping and even more excited to get home and put it together right away. The excitement quickly dissipated when I got home and read the dreaded words “some assembly required” on the box. Ugh, my plans screeched to a halt as I recalled my past attempts of putting together my somewhat wobbly TV stand and my pictures vicariously hanging on my apartment walls, not to mention the time it took me to do these seemingly simple tasks. After a couple minutes of deliberation I decided to post-pone assembly for a later date.
While I felt quite accomplished after I put the hamper together in about FOURTY minutes, I started thinking about how much easier and quicker that task would have been if I had a man to put that together for me. (In my defense: I can wear an extra small clinic glove so having some large strong hands would have probably cut the time of assembly in half.) As I thought those thoughts I immediately scolded myself for thinking that way. (After reading I Kissed Dating Goodbye by Joshua Harris, I’ve recently been making a conscious effort to not think about what my future S.O. will be doing for me but how I WILL ENHANCE their life. After much thought and reflection I believe that’s really what any relationship should be about: people unselfishly striving to enhance someone’s life without regard to what that person will do for them. But I digress, those thoughts are worthy of a post on their own.)
Despite scolding myself for thinking that way I continued to make (& Tweet!) a mental list of “duties I'll b happy to relinquish as soon as I'm married…” which in twitter shorthand “include but r not ltd to: pumpin gas cuttin grass washin car & putting ish 2gthr...some things r just men jobs!” and “Oh...I can't 4get...taking out the trash...” As I tweeted this list I asked myself “are these duties unreasonable to expect of my future hubby?” I really don’t think so, it’s not like I CAN’T do them or REFUSE to do them because I definitely do them now in my HAPPILY single day to day life. And I will definitely be down for the cause if my husband for whatever reason is physically unable or unavailable to do these things in a timely manner but these will be things that will touch my heart each time my hubby does them no questions asked. My top 2 love languages are Quality time and Acts of service (in that order) so while I would love for him to do these on his own I’d be elated to wash the car(s) or take on a weekend home improvement project together. But regardless, there are some things that are JUST MAN JOBS! Even my 3 year old little brother realizes this as he recently told me “girls don’t ride tractors, daddy’s do!” after seeing a tractor commercial on tv. (I quickly made sure he knew that girls can do anything “daddy’s” can do, while inside I was elated that he will be the type of man to WANT to take care of those “man jobs.”)
So while I do realize some of these requests (especially the gas and trash) are a bit anti-feminist there are some things that are just easier when men do them. What do you all think? Am I crazy? I’ll leave you with your thoughts and a video of Jill performing “The Fact Is I Need You” She pretty well sums up my views on this subject in a much more beautiful way.

YOGA How I have missed thee
Well I forgot how much I enjoy yoga. Its been too long.
And as usually I was the only brown skin girl in a class of 50 people. We really must get some black woman into yoga. yoga has so many benefits for the mind, body and spirit.
- It compliments all types of workout regimens
- It tones your body. You are working against your own body weight.
- Elongates the body.
- Calms the spirit
- Relieves stress
- the lists goes on...
Your body is your temple!
SO this is the plan. I will be back in Chapel Hill on Saturday June 25th!! I would like as many of my friends, readers etc etc to go to the 9am saturday morning yoga class. Lets diversify this thang!
Go to an intro class if that will help you feel more comfy. But believe me.. you can jump right into it.

Maybe its because I am a summer baby.... or maybe its my love for life... but I LOVE summer time. I love the month of may especially. I'm sad to see it go.. cool mornings and blooming flowers leave us for humidity and hot evenings. May was jam packed with fun. June I hope is filled with ice cream trips, the movies, sandals and shorts!
First was my weekend in NYC and then I was able to share a wonderful weekend in Nashville with a special friend LaVonne. http://theyearofthe25.blogspot.com/2011/05/age-of-25.html
